Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan, 1st Match, Group B preview

Sri Lanka

Angelo Mathews is not a part of the squad that has been announced by the SLC for the tournament.  Dasun Shanaka will be leading the side with Dinesh Chandimal as part of the squad as well. Wanindu Hasaranga will be the premier spinner.

The side has won the title five times the last of which was in 2014. They defeated Pakistan in the final to win the title for the fifth time.  This time around they have a balanced squad with talented players to take them the distance.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan are the dark horse of this tournament.  Heading into this tournament they played 10 games and came up with some decent performances.

They clean swept Zimbabwe in a T20I series while the series against Zimbabwe finished 1-1 and 2-3 to Ireland.  The Afghanistan vs Ireland series is the most evenly contested series in recent times.

Mohammed Nabi will be leading the side and the onus will be on the experienced players to guide them through against the bigger teams. The Asian side looks set to make a few major upsets in this tournament.

Top Picks – Batters

Pathum Nissanka: With 326 runs in 11 matches this year, Pathum Nissanka has enjoyed a lot of success in T20Is.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa: He is one of the most destructive batters in this format. His statistics in T20Is don’t do justice to the talent that he possesses.

Top Picks – All-Rounders

Wanindu Hasaranga: He is the fastest to reach that mark in terms of time as he completed a 50-wicket haul in just 2 years and 61 days in International Cricket. Mohammad Nabi: He has already attained the legend status in Afghanistan cricket. The captain of the team has played 96 T20Is and has a chance to play his 100th game in this tournament.

Top Picks – Bowlers

Rashid Khan: After going wicket-less in the first 3 T20Is against Ireland this month, Rashid Khan bounced back to pick 3 wickets in the last 2 games of the five-match series. Maheesh Theekshana: In 18 T20Is, Maheesh Theekshana has picked 16 wickets at an average of 27.37 out of which 7 wickets have come this year.

Top Picks – Wicketkeeper

Rahmanullah Gurbaz: He is easily the best wicketkeeper pick for this match among the other players.
