The ATP Finals remain Novak Djokovic’s aim despite a wrist injury
After winning his 21st Grand Slam singles championship at Wimbledon in early July, Djokovic competed in his first tournament for three days at London’s O2 Arena.
The 35-year-old, who was unable to compete in the North American hardcourt swing and the U.S. Open because of a COVID-19 vaccination deficiency, put on a stunning display on his Tour comeback on Saturday by triumphing in both singles and doubles matches.
On Sunday’s last day of competition, he was defeated by Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.
To be honest, I’ve been having trouble with my right wrist for the past four or five days. I’ve been controlling it, Djokovic assured reporters.
He said that the two games from yesterday most likely had an impact. Today was challenging. He wasn’t able to service as quickly or precisely as he would have liked. That has had an impact on the entire game.
Djokovic stated that reaching the ATP Finals in Turin in November remained his objective. He added that he will compete in a tournament this week in Tel Aviv, a tournament in Kazakhstan the following week, and the Paris Masters at the end of October.
If he stays rated in the top 20 in the world, his Wimbledon triumph ensures him a place in the Tour-ending Finals.
The wrist problem may be caused by a number of circumstances, according to seventh-ranked Djokovic.
Since there haven’t been any games for about three months, he speculated, “the conditions here could be such that the balls are particularly enormous and slow.”
