Defeating third seeds Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See of Malaysia 21-19 21-17 in a 39-minute match, the unseeded Indian team of Sikki and Kapoor, who had won the Chhattisgarh International Challenge championship the previous week, shocked the field.
The pair will compete in the semifinals against top seeds Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Lisa Ayu Kusumawati of Indonesia.
By overturning a 3-6 deficit to take a razor-thin one-point lead, Sikki and Kapoor displayed steely resolve.
The Indian duo managed to turn the tables with a four-point surge to lead 19-18 and then snatched the final two points to take a 1-0 match lead. The Malaysians once again edged out the opposition to a 15-12 lead.
The Indian team made sure there was no glitch by breaking off from 12-12 to never look back in the second game as Sikki and Kapoor got off to a strong start. This was true even though the Malaysian team briefly had a 10-8 advantage.
