Rafa Nadal can’t wait for Roger Federer to make his comeback next month; the Swiss great hasn’t played professional tennis in over a year. Neither can his devoted following.
Roger Federer’s comeback at the Laver Cup has Rafael Nadal “very pumped”
The 41-year-old Federer hasn’t played since Wimbledon last year due to knee problems that have plagued him in the latter stages of his glittering career. He underwent another operation on the knee.
The 20-time Grand Slam singles winner is anticipated to make a comeback to the circuit in September when he partners up with longtime adversary and buddy Nadal to play doubles at the Laver Cup in London. The following month, he is slated to compete at the Swiss indoor event in Basel.
Nadal, who holds the record for the most Grand Slam championships by a man with 22, told reporters on Friday ahead of the US Open, “Of course, really eager to see Roger again on court.”
“I hope his health will allow him to do it. Let’s see, I guess. Roger has been absent from the court for a very long time, so I sincerely hope he can make it back. However, let’s see.
In the past two years, Federer has had three knee procedures. He hasn’t participated in a competitive match since Hubert Hurkacz defeated him in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2021.
However, the Swiss has maintained his position at the top of the list of tennis players in the world for a 17th year despite not competing for over 14 months, demonstrating his popularity in the sport.
Fans and analysts alike are speculating as to how much longer Federer will continue to play tennis given his recent knee issues.
Health and happiness are the most crucial factors at this point in his career, right? claimed Nadal.
“If he is fit and content enough to return to the tennis circuit, (it) will be wonderful. In that case, all we can do is applaud him for his accomplishments.
We will continue to have Roger around for a while, I’m sure of it. I’m excited to play on his squad in the Laver Cup, yeah.
