Rajasthan United FC and Chennaiyin FC advance to the quarterfinals
The second-place finish for RUFC in Group B was secured by goals from Youssef Atriss and Sergio Barboza Junior in the second half.
As the winner of their group, Mumbai City FC had already qualified. The top two finishers in the group, ATK Mohun Bagan (ATKMB), also had seven points, however they were eliminated due to their group opener loss to RUFC.
RUFC, who required a victory to go to the knockout rounds, got off to a fast start against a Navy team that was fighting for dignity after earning only one point from its first three games and had little chance to advance.
Due to the fact that the game was largely played in the center of the park, neither team was able to generate any clear opportunities. Both sides committed fouls while trying to halt each other’s actions, which caused the game to stop and start frequently.
With a continuous assault on the Navy box to begin the second half, RUFC. Gyamar Nikum, 17, and Barboza, two halftime substitutions, gave RUFC’s offence additional bite. In the 73rd minute, Lebanese attacker Attris gave RUFC their first goal of the game. Vishnu made a strong stop on a drive from Ragav Gupta that came from beyond the area, but Barboza pounced on the rebound and crossed past him, leaving Youssef with no choice but to touch it into the open goal.
Barboza’s run in response to a superb through pass by Nikum in the 89th minute led to a confident finish past Vishnu that gave his team the victory.
